Ullen Sentalu Museum

Safeguarding the Royal Heritage of the Mataram Kingdom
Nestled in the misty highlands of Kaliurang, Yogyakarta, the Ullen Sentalu Museum stands as an architectural masterpiece seamlessly integrated into Kaswargan Park, a serene enclave rich with historic landmarks. The surrounding area features iconic sites such as the Hastorenggo Guest House, commissioned by Sultan Hamengkubuwono VII (who reigned from 1877 to 1921), and Wisma Kaliurang, a historic villa managed by the National Consultative Commission that served as a pivotal diplomatic venue during Indonesia’s Independence Revolution (1945–1949). Born out of a private family’s profound love for Javanese art and textiles, the museum was conceptualized in the 1970s out of a deep concern for the preservation of vanishing antique batiks, ultimately sparking a monumental foundation to save these ancient royal relics.

The noble initiative received enthusiastic support and patronage from the four ruling branches of the historic Mataram Dynasty. Guardian figures who championed the museum’s inspiration include Sri Paduka Paku Alam VIII (1937–1998), Sunan Pakubuwono Through the generous personal grants of these royal families, Ullen Sentalu was entrusted with a priceless repository of rare heirloom batik cloths, royal accessories, vintage photographs, ancient manuscripts, and intimate letters detailing life within the palace walls.

Designed under the visionary guidance of Dr. K.P. Haryoto Widyadiningrat, the museum’s brilliant architecture is a masterclass in gothic-organic fusion, built entirely from local volcanic river stones to achieve absolute harmony with the enveloping jungle canopy. The museum layout is divided into two primary structural marvels: Goa Selo Giri (a subterranean, cave-like stone gallery) and Bale Kambang (a spectacular floating pavilion built over water). Within the winding corridors of Goa Selo Giri, visitors can marvel at an exquisite collection of classic Yogyakarta and Surakarta court batiks, along with coastal coastal batik masterpieces, each echoing a deep, nostalgic longing for Java’s golden aristocratic golden age.
