Experience the Majestic Pekalen River Rafting
Tucked away in East Java lies a river steeped in royal history and breathtaking natural wonders: the Pekalen River. Located in Ranu Gedang Village, within the Tiris district about 25 kilometers from Probolinggo town this destination offers a truly enchanting white-water adventure.
Local folklore tells us that the stunning beauty of the Probolinggo area once completely charmed King Hayam Wuruk and his famous prime minister, Gajah Mada, during the golden age of the Majapahit Kingdom. In fact, it is believed the name “Probolinggo” evolved from the phrase “Prabu Linggih,” commemorating the place where the king sat and marveled at the landscape. Even the name of the starting village, Ranu Gedang, carries local flavor named after the abundance of lush banana trees (“Gedang” in the Javanese language) that blanket the region.
A Magical Ride Past Exotic Waterfalls
White-water rafting has steadily grown into one of Indonesia’s favourite adventure sports, and the Pekalen River stands out as a crown jewel. Fed by pure mountain streams and the springs of Mount Lamongan, the river spans between 5 to 20 meters wide, with water depths ranging from 1 to 3 meters.
The total river stretches winds for about 29 kilometers and is split into three distinct, thrill-packed areas (Upper, Middle, and Lower Pekalen). For this 12-kilometer journey, you will navigate exhilarating Grade II to IV rapids. As you paddle through the rushing currents, you will literally split the river flows and cruise right past exotic, hidden waterfalls cascading down the canyon walls.
Safe, Fun, and Heart-Pounding
Whether you are an experienced rafter or a spirited beginner, the Pekalen River promises an incredible experience. With top-tier safety standards and professional river guides leading the way, anyone can safely enjoy this majestic 2.5-hour journey. After conquering the rapids, you can rinse off in clean facilities and enjoy a wonderful local lunch.
