The Majestic Golden Sunrise of the Dieng Plateau
Perched high in the clouds, the Dieng Plateau stands as the highest inhabited plateau on Java Island. Straddling the borders of the Banjarnegara and Wonosobo districts in Central Java, this breathtaking volcanic highland sits just west of Mount Sindoro. Blessed with a delightfully cool alpine climate and dramatic vistas, Dieng is a treasure trove of natural wonders, playing host to legendary attractions such as the color-shifting Telaga Warna lake, the bubbling Sikidang Crater, the ancient 8th-century Arjuna Temple complex, and the educational Kailasa Museum.
Among its many gems, Sikunir Hill is globally renowned as the ultimate vantage point for catching the most spectacular sunrise on the island. Located right next to the pristine, high-altitude Cebong Lake, the hill requires a rewarding, relatively mild 30-minute trek to reach its summit. Because the mountain water can drop significantly before dawn, visitors are highly encouraged to dress in warm layers, jackets, gloves, and beanies. For travelers caught unprepared by the crisp morning chill, a welcoming row of local stalls near Cebong Lake offers hot drinks, fried delicacies, and essential winter gear.
The true reward awaits at the summit between 5:00 AM and 5:30 AM. From the peak of Sikunir, the horizon ignites into the famous “Golden Sunrise” a breathtaking display of amber light cutting through rolling seas of morning mist. When visited in the middle of the year, the sun rises perfectly into a crystal-clear blue sky, revealing an unforgettable panoramic backdrop of Java’s majestic volcanic peaks.
