Kawah Putih

The Surreal, Color-Shifting Volcanic Crater of Ciwidey
Perched dramatically on the slopes of Mount Patuha in Rancabali, Bandung Regency, Kawah Putih (White Crater) is one of Indonesia’s most strikingly beautiful volcanic landscapes. Spanning approximately 25 hectares, this breathtaking crater lake was formed by a monumental eruption of Mount Patuha centuries ago. True to its name, the surrounding terrain is blanketed in chalky white volcanic ash, while the lake itself displays a mesmerizing, otherworldly greenish-white hue. Due to fluctuations in sulfur concentration, ambient temperature, and alpine weather patterns, the water is dynamically color-shifting, fluidly transitioning between pale turquoise, milky white, and deep sky blue.

Sustained at a soaring altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level, Kawah Putih enjoys a remarkably crisp, cool climate, with temperatures pleasantly hovering between 8°C and 22°C. This refreshing mountain atmosphere, combined with the landscape’s surreal, mist-shrouded geometry, makes it an absolute paradise for international travelers, landscape painters, and professional photographers. Beyond sightseeing, the sprawling park offers an array of mountain activities, including scenic ridge trekking, horse riding, and pre-wedding photography.

Before the 19th century, local communities widely regarded the mountain as a mystical, haunted domain, largely because birds would mysteriously perish when flying across the summit. The scientific reality behind the myth was finally unveiled in 1837 by the celebrated German-Dutch botanist and geologist, Dr. Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn. While conducting research in West Java, Junghuhn braved the dense wilderness to discover that the avian fatalities were simply caused by heavy, invisible vents of natural sulfur gas escaping the lake.

Recognizing its rich mineral value, the Dutch colonial government established a prominent sulfur mining factory on-site named Zwavel Ontginning Kawah Putih. Decades later, during World War II, the Japanese military seized control of operations, renaming the facility Kawah Putih Kenzaka Gokoya Ciwidey. Throughout these colonial occupations, the crater remained strictly an industrial mining hub closed to the public. It was not until 1987 that the site was officially transformed into a protected tourist destination, beautifully preserved and managed today by state forestry corporation PT Perhutani.
