A Sanctuary of Divine Peace and Sacred Springs in Sleman
Located in Klepu Village, Sumberarum, Moyudan, within the Sleman Regency, Jatiningsih Mary Cave is a peaceful Catholic pilgrimage site situated roughly 20 kilometers west of downtown Yogyakarta. Renowned for its sacred spring waters, this holy sanctuary offers an immediate escape from the chaotic bustle of urban life. Enveloped by crisp, fresh air and a tranquil landscape, it provides the perfect setting for pilgrims looking to quiet their minds and draw closer to the Divine.
Perched gracefully on the banks of the Progo River, the shrine benefits from a uniquely soothing atmosphere enhanced by the gentle, meditative sound of flowing river water. At the heart of the site is the sacred spring itself, which has been thoughtfully funneled through modern taps for the convenience of visitors. Pilgrims are welcome to refresh themselves by washing their faces or collecting the holy water in bottles to take home as a source of blessing.
The history of Gua Maria Jatiningsih carries a profound cultural transformation. Long before the Mary Cave was established, the site was known to locals as Sendang Pusung (the Pusung Spring). The word Pusung is derived from the Javanese phrase “Sing Ngapusi Busung,” a traditional warning implying that anyone who speaks falsehoods or breaks a sacred trust would face divine misfortune. As the site was embraced by the Catholic community, it was beautifully renamed Sendang Jatiningsih meaning “The Spring of True Love and Grace” signifying a holy fountain originating from God’s love that brings true peace to the soul.
Inside the shrine, pilgrims can light a candle and offer devotions directly in front of the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For convenience, candles are readily available on-site via a charitable donation box. To ensure a seamless and comfortable pilgrimage, Jatiningsih Mary Cave is well-equipped with clean public facilities, local food stalls, souvenir shops, and a spacious parking area.
