Imogiri Royal Cemetery

A Sacred Sanctuary of Mataram Kings
Nestled atop the misty ridges of the Seribu Mountains in Girirejo, Bantul, Yogyakarta, lies the Imogiri Royal Cemetery (Pasarean Imogiri). This highly revered royal cemetery complex was commissioned between 1632 and 1640 AD by Sultan Agung Hanyokrokusumo, the legendary third ruler of the Islamic Mataram Sultanate, who designated it as his final resting place. To this day, the sovereign rulers and royal families of both the Yogyakarta Sultanate and the Surakarta Sunanate are laid to rest within these sacred grounds.

Imogiri attracts thousands of domestic pilgrims and cultural travelers who come to pay their respects while taking in the stunning panoramic vistas of the surrounding highlands. The complex remains a bastion of living Javanese traditions. Every year during the auspicious month of Suro (the Javanese New Year), the community gathers to perform the highly sacred Kong Enceh ritual the traditional cleaning and draining of four massive holy water heirlooms (padasan).

At the heart of the complex stands an ancient mosque built during the reign of Sultan Agung. While the exterior foundation has seen minor modern enhancements, the building remarkably preserves its original architectural core. Inside, the mosque features traditional square teak pillars resting on stone bases, a beautifully carved wooden pulpit (mimbar), and a distinct prayer niche (mihrab). The structure also features a dedicated Pawestren (women’s prayer section) and a historic drum drum suspended in the foyer.

Architecturally, the cemetery is accessed via four grand brick gateways, designed in the iconic Candi Bentar (split gateway) style with no roof or doors. These imposing 220 cm high structures are adorned with intricate Javanese geometric reliefs and traditional Tumpal (triangle) motifs, seamlessly blending ancient Hindu-Javanese aesthetics with Islamic spirituality.
