Lawangsih Mary Cave

A Sanctuary of Divine Grace in the Menoreh Hills
Tucked away in the scenic Menoreh Hills, Gua Maria Lawangsih (Lawangsih Mary Cave) is a profound spiritual sanctuary located in Patihombo, Purwosari Village, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta. Ecclesiastically, this peaceful pilgrimage site falls under the Pelemdukuh region of the Lady of Fatima Parish in Nanggulan, within the Archdiocese of Semarang.

Originally a natural cavern inhabited by bats, the cave was owned by a local resident, T. Sutikno, who generously donated it to the Church. Under the guidance of Father Ignatius Slamet Riyanto, it was transformed into a sacred place of worship. The construction of the shrine was a testament to communal devotion; for nearly a year, local Catholics and residents worked hand-in-hand, relying entirely on traditional tools rather than modern machinery to carefully excavate, clean, and shape the cave.

The name Lawangsih carries a beautiful, deep-rooted linguistic meaning derived from the Javanese words Lawang (door or gate) and Asih (affection, love, or grace). Spiritually, Lawangsih honors the Virgin Mary as the “Gate of Heaven” the loving intermediary through whom Jesus came to redeem mankind and offer eternal life.

The architecture of Lawangsih Cave is uniquely captivating, balancing raw nature with sacred art. Following the philosophical design suggestions of the legendary Indonesian architect Father YB. Mangunwijaya, the original natural limestone walls were meticulously preserved without structural alteration. On the west side, a chapel seamlessly integrates with the raw stone. Behind the altar, the space is decorated with distinctive paintings depicting the Puppet Kingdom of Heaven (Javanese Wayang style), alongside imagery of deer grazing on green pastures behind the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Above, an artistic depiction of the five loaves and two fishes serves as a powerful symbol of faith, stewardship, and the spirit of sharing.

Cradled by nature and rich in Javanese Catholic culture, Gua Maria Lawangsih remains one of Yogyakarta’s most tranquil and meaningful destinations for spiritual reflection.
