Sukamade Beach

The Sacred Sanctuary of Java’s Sea Turtles
Hidden deep within the pristine wilderness of Meru Betiri National Park, Sukamade Beach is a legendary eco-tourism destination located roughly 97 kilometers southwest of Banyuwangi. Stretching across 3 kilometers of untouched coastline, this remote sanctuary is celebrated as one of Indonesia’s most important marine turtle nesting grounds. Supported by global conservation efforts like the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the beach serves as a vital landing site for multiple endangered sea turtle species, including the massive Leatherback (Lembing Turtle), Olive Ridley (Lekang Turtle), and Hawksbill (Hawkbill Turtle). Among these, the iconic Green Sea Turtle and the Olive Ridley are the most frequent visitors to these shores.

The thriving presence of these ancient marine creatures is a testament to Sukamade’s fiercely protected ecosystem. Their ongoing nesting habits serve as living proof that the natural integrity of this coastal parkland remains beautifully intact. Safeguarding this habitat requires collective dedication from both park rangers and eco-conscious traveler. As a premier marine sanctuary on Java Island, Sukamade functions as a critical stronghold for turtle conservation, fighting directly against the global decline of these majestic species.

Sukamade Beach witnesses active turtle nesting year-round. On average, around 20 sea turtles emerge from the crashing surf each month to lay their eggs under the cover of night, with each nest containing anywhere from 100 to 140 eggs. Ranger stations carefully collect and transfer at least 2,500 eggs monthly to protected hatcheries to safeguard them from natural predators. This intervention is crucial, as the natural survival rate of a sea turtle from hatchling to adulthood is a staggering 1 in 1,000. Out of a thousand hatchlings that safely crawl into the ocean, only a single resilient survivor will beat the odds to reach maturity, making the conservation work at Sukamade absolutely vital.
