Mount Tangkuban Perahu

The Living Legend and Geological Marvel of Bandung
Standing majestically at an altitude of 2,084 meters above sea level, Mount Tangkuban Perahu is one of the most iconic active stratovolcanoes in West Java. Located approximately 20 kilometres north of Bandung city, this natural wonder is characterized by its unique, inverted-boat profile. The volcano’s vast craters continuously vent plumes of sulfurous vapor, leaving behind a rich landscape of volcanic rock and therapeutic minerals. Today, the site is carefully managed as a protected natural park under the forestry and volcanological authorities of the West Java government.

Beyond its geological significance, the volcano is deeply intertwined with the legendary Sundanese folklore of Sangkuriang. According to the myth, a young man named Sangkuriang fell in love with a beautiful woman, unaware that she was her own long-lost mother, Dayang Sumbi. To thwart his forbidden marriage proposal, Dayang Sumbi set an impossible condition: Sangkuriang had to build a massive lake and a boat in a single night. Realizing he would fail as dawn broke, an enraged Sangkuriang kicked the unfinished boat away. The vessel landed upside down, transforming into the mountain we see today aptly named Tangkuban Perahu, which means “upturned boat” in Sundanese.

Geologically, scientists believe the entire Bandung basin which sits roughly 709 meters above sea level is the caldera of an ancient supervolcano known as Mount Sunda. Mount Tangkuban Perahu is the active remnant of this prehistoric giant. The volcanic activity that shaped this region is still very much alive today, evidenced by several dramatic craters across the summit and natural thermal features at the base of the mountain, including the highly popular Ciater Hot Springs. This striking combination of living folklore and raw volcanic power makes Tangkuban Perahu a cornerstone of Sundanese cultural tradition and tourism.
